The brothers had quite different personalities, with Rudolf the bombastic salesman and Adolf the quiet shoe designer. They lived together in the same house with their wives during World War II and their relationship got more and more strained juice bets. When Rudolf was drafted into the German army, he believed that Adolf had pulled strings to get Rudolf out of his hair. Later, when Rudolf was captured by American soldiers and accused of being a member of SS (the armed force of the Nazi Party), he believed that Adolf had tipped the Americans off (Rudolf was cleared of the charges).
Adidas has transformed significantly since its inception. Founded in 1949, the brand initially focused solely on sports equipment. By the 1980s, Adidas branched into lifestyle footwear, blending performance with everyday wear. Collaborations with designers like Yohji Yamamoto and fashion lines such as Adidas by Stella McCartney elevated the brand’s status. He separated the business from his brother in 1948 (Rudolf would go on to found Puma) and most of the employees chose to work for Adi, who in 1949 designed the company’s iconic three stripe logo and used the combination of his own name to create the company name.
The brand-name ‘Adidas’ was invented as a coined-word derived out of the nick name of the founder ‘Adi Dassler’. Also there is a myth that the brand-name ‘Adidas’ is an acronym for ‘All Day I Dream About Sports’, which meant the deep passion of Adolf Dassler towards his mission of making world-class sports goods. The story goes this way… in 1949, at the age of 49, Adi Dassler started over again, by registering the firm “Adi Dassler Adidas Sportschuhfabrik’ in the commercial register (Handelsregister), with 47 employees in a small town named Herzogenaurach in Bavaria, Germany which has grown to the position of a lead-brand in sports goods, having 54,000+ employees in 2015.
Along with his brother Rudolf, he operated what was then known as the Dassler Brothers Sports Shoe Factory, which ended up being rather successful as by 1928 they were supplying international athletes with shoes.
